Chandan Biswas

Filmmaker. Editor. Storyteller.

Chandan Biswas is a film director, film editor and poet with unpublished poems based in West Bengal, India. After he graduated from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, he joined Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute of India (Film Editing Department). His art practice is concerned with how different media and forms of cinema, literature, sound, visuals can be juxtaposed and made to interact with each other to explore themes which range from the quotidian and non-aesthetic to the grand movements of history. From his University days he gained a keen interest in the anthropological and political study of Bengal through avant-grade literature and marginalised film practices.

He works on various films which have been selected in numerous national and international film festivals and galleries.His first co-directed film The Running Hawker (2017) premiered at DMZ Docs South Korea, 2018 and Film South Asia, 2017. He edited Jole Dobe Na (Those Who do Not Drown) by Naeem Mohaiemen which was screened at the Yokohama Triennale, 2020 and at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, 2022. He participated in the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, IDFA project space in 2022. He received the Experimenter Generator Arts Grant for his next directorial work Through Scratches, 2023.

Chandan lives and works in West Bengal.
